ION BOND TiN Coatings

ION BOND TiN is a wear resistant, biocompatible titanium nitride coating produced with the propriety ION BOND physical vapor deposition (PVD) process.

ION BOND TiN Coating is a general purpose coating for machining of iron based materials, metal fabricating, plastic molding, wear part, decorative and medical device applications. The high hardness and low coefficeient of friction of ION BOND TiN reduces erosion, abrasion and metal-on-metal wear. The coating also resists corrosion. ION BOND TiN is not inclined to stick to or bond with other materials. Wear surfaces and cutting edges remain free of galling and cold bonding for long periods of time. ION BOND TiN’s strong adhesion and dense, pore-free microstructure prevents flaking and cracking at cutting edge or wear surfaces, even in cases of extreme compressive forces. The rich gold color offers better wear resistance than gold itself for the specialty decorative market and medical devices.

Cutting Tool Applications

ION BOND TiN is the ideal coating for a wide range of applications, materials and cutting conditions where tool life and elevated feeds and speeds are operating objectives. The high lubricity of ION BOND TiN facilitates chip flow, prevents built up edge and reduces heat generated in the metal removal process. ION BOND TiN reduces wear and rounding of cutting edges consequently improves the ease of cutting and extends tool life.

ION BOND TiN is the coating of choice for machining general purpose steels, stainless steels and wrought aluminum alloys. Suitable substrate materials include: high speed steels, A,D,H,O and P series tool steels, powder metallurgy grades, cemented carbide and cermets.

Other Applications

ION BOND TiN is suitable for dies, punches, and a variety of metal stamping and forming tools. Other successful applications include plastic molds, converting rolls, automotive and aircraft engine components, medical devices and decorative components.
