ION BOND TiAlN Coatings

ION BOND TiAlN is a titanium aluminum nitride alloy coating produced with the proprietary ION BOND physical vapor deposition (PVD) process.

ION BOND TiAlN has exceptional performance compared to other coatings in many machining and metal fabricating applications. The key to ION BOND TiAlN’s coating performance is the addition of aluminum to TiN, which increases hot hardness, as well as the oxidation stability of the coating. ION BOND TiAlN oxidation threshold temperature 800-900 degrees Celsius is the highest of any commercially available coating. ION BOND TiAlN has excellent ductility, despite its hot harness, which makes ION BOND TiAlN coating tools less susceptible to chipping when used for interrupted cutting.

TiAlN is now available in two versions. ION BOND 17 is the origin al and has a bronze color. ION BOND 17-III has a black color and a higher hardness and smoother surface finish compared to the original. Both coatings have excellent hot hardness.

Cutting Tool Applications
ION BOND TiAlN’s features make it ideal for high temperature cutting operations in difficult-to-machine metals. When exposed to high cutting temperature, TiAlN forms a hard aluminum oxide layer with low thermal conductivity. As cutting temperatures increase, TiAlN rejects more heat into the chips and away from the tool. This results in reduced cutting forces and allows higher speeds and feeds. In tests cutting 4340/4140 steels, ION BOND TiAlN could be run at 2 to 4 times the metal removal rates of TiN. ION BOND TiAlN also provides longer tool life. Field tests show a 2 to 4 times life improvement compared to TiN and TiCN coatings in the milling and turning of titanium and up to 10 times the life of uncoated tools.

TiAlN has performed well cutting titanium alloys, nickel based alloys, Co-Cr-Mo, stainless steels, alloy steels and cast irons. Successful applications include end mills, drills, reamers, indexable carbide inserts, cutoff and threading inserts, broaches, hobs, and shaper cutters.

Metal Fabricating
ION BOND TiAlN is suitable for dies, molds, and other metal fabricating tools that operate at high temperatures. ION BOND TiAlN’s high harness protects dies and molds from wear while its low thermal conductivity prevents heat checking and thermal fatigue. Potential applications include medium and hot forging dies and die casting molds.
