ION BOND CrN Coatings
ION
bond CrN is a wear resistant chromium nitride coating produced with the proprietary Ion
Bo0nd physical vapor (PVD) process.
The greater coating thickness of ION BOND CrN provides superior
performance and toughness over other PVD and CVD coatings in metal fabricating and wear
applications. It has better corrosion resistance than TiN, especially in aqueous
solutions. The ION BOND CrN coating can be used as a direct substitute for other surface
enhancement techniques, such as chromium plating, ion nitrideing, chemical vapor
disposition (CVD) and the thermal diffusion process. ION BOND CrN is twice as hard as
conventional hard chrome plating. The high hardness, low coefficient of friction and low
residual stress levels of the ION BOND CrN coating combine to resist abrasive wear,
metal-on-metal wear and galling.

Metal Forming Applications
ION BOND CrN coating has high hardness, excellent oxidation resistance and a low
coefficient of friction. The metallic silver color is similar in appearance to polished
stainless steel. ION BOND CrNs features make it ideal for medium and heavy metal
forming. The ION BOND CrN coating resists abrasive war, metal-on-metal wear and galling.
In addition, the excellent adhesion and toughness of ION BOND CrN provides shock
resistance. The low temperature disposition process allows coating of the tools without
causing distortion of dimensional changes. This allows the coating of close tolerance,
precision tools that are incompatible with high temperature CVD and thermal diffusion
processes.
ION BOND CrN performs well under the high loads experienced in
medium and heavy forming of carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum and copper alloys. ION
BOND CrN also performs well in hot forging and die casting applications where its
hot hardness, oxidation resistance and low thermal conductivity prevent erosion, abrasion,
wash out and cold welding.
